American Renaissance

Oh, say
can you see?
American beauty

No, this is not televised
unlike Harlem

Blacks are not
sacrificially
looking for
liberation
But just in case,
how white’s your skin?

No, this is not civilized
unlike the Harlem
Blacks are not
vigilantly
looking for
assimilation.
But just in case,
how black’s your skin?

We know everything
about
mixing and brewing
recipes of refinement from all
heritages.
We are a generations in perpetuum
seemingly knowing
no enemies, just
eternally weary friends.

“A new Renaissance,” we say.
And they say this time looks different?
But new editions of old books still
have the same text
only condensed.
And they say this time feels different?
But cardiac arrest
can feel like heartburn
only more intense.
And they say this time sounds different?
But all orchestras
play the Classics with specialty
only in pretense.

But we’re special? Cause
my generation saw
a Black man for President
less than forty years
after the darkening of hope’s star
“A Black man!?”
is what they say
as we can’t forget
how the color of skin
builds barriers
and breaks backs.

But we were special? Cause
my generation see
ha!–
now let’s talk about that
darkening of hope’s star
destined to be hated again
“A Dead man!”
is what they say
as we can’t remember
how the color of skin
builds barriers
and breaks backs.

Yet we need to see
that our neck-laced necks are
clenched so tight
that our eyes buck
and we can only see
these false illusions of
hope
we need to see
the text that we legit
can’t read, illiterate
becomes our breed
and we say
these false terms of
inspiration
As what we can be passes by
as what we can achieve passes by
as what we can accomplish passes by
as what we are becomes apparent,
pursuers of that dream,
Americans.

Black Matter (No Absolution of Light)

You see the dark
and expect darkness
believing the black
is the pure absence of light
My heart breaks in your darkness
my brothers
and my sisters
fading in your light

I am the dark
and accept my darkness
knowing the black
is complete absorption of light
My heart aches in my darkness
oppressed in presence
false absolution that fails redemption

In your absence
you see nothing but sacrificial lamb-
ency
my glow is more radiant than your
expiring sun
too much light, unjust judge
kills
nothing lives
yet, darkness keeps unknown balance
a regal matter of
great importance
black grace is distinctly mindful,
black love is distinctly spiritual
black matter occupying space even at rest

I see the darkness
and embrace the dark
understanding that light
only exists because
of me

Here and Now
