Black Matter (No Absolution of Light)

Very insightful emails asking me to explain my thoughts in the writing of this poem. I took the definitions of black and of matter and began to express how white can’t exist with black and light can’t exist without darkness. In the simplest of terms, nothing exists without matter. It is the very essence and foundation of composition. In truth, black matter is my truth and my being.

Flowing Like Milk and Honey

You see the dark
and expect darkness
believing the black
is the pure absence of light
My heart breaks in your darkness
my brothers
and my sisters
fading in your light

I am the dark
and accept my darkness
knowing the black
is complete absorption of light
My heart aches in my darkness
oppressed in presence
false absolution that fails redemption

In your absence
you see nothing but sacrificial lamb-
ency
my glow is more radiant than your
expiring sun
too much light, unjust judge
kills
nothing lives
yet, darkness keeps unknown balance
a regal matter of
great importance
black grace is distinctly mindful,
black love is distinctly spiritual
black matter occupying space even at rest

I see the darkness
and embrace the dark
understanding that light
only exists because
of me

Black Girl Magic

And then he told me that he did not see me as black
but as a beautiful woman
and that race didn’t matter.
The last time that he ever spoke.
Because what I said was…
Just because you find
yourself
saying that all these random
colors are a part of the rainbow,
you don’t even notice that black and white
are not
there.
A universal joke played in mankind
trying to pretend he’s a part of something
because he’s too afraid not to be what he really
is.
And then beautiful!
As if I could be otherwise
born from the earth as I am.
Be me sweet
like golden honey, Ambrosia
and strong
like black fertile soil, Mother Earth
my race does matter
feel free to believe that
the range of my heritage will not
be removed from this earth of from my spirit,
a heritage from the cradle of man
and to which all men shall return.
Acknowledge it
then understand that I can transcend it
if I wanted to
but why deny the beauty
richness
power of my melanin pride?
Accept me for the black woman
the black passion
the black essence
that I represent.
Because my race matters
and I proudly flaunt
the black beauty of it.

Zing!

Flowing Like Milk and Honey

The words melt
on my tongue
like chocolate.
Sweetly,
I say the things
that I do not mean.
Silky smooth
the words are
as they coat my tongue
in the lies
that come so easily now.
A lavishness developed
by the desire
to harmlessly please
you.
Love’s diet isn’t
just
and the sweet decadence
only lasts briefly
as the
chalky aftertaste
of truths untold
melts
on my tongue
like bittersweet
chocolate.
